Guwahati: Following the directives of Assam CM, Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha conducted a drive to remove and rehabilitate beggars and street dwellers living under a flyover in Guwahati’s Ulubari area to shelter homes .

Top police officials in Assam conducted a late-night drive in Guwahati to remove beggars from under the flyover and rehabilitate them, on the directions of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha visited the Ulubari area in the state capital. He said, “CM keeps visiting the city at night and sees the issues the city faces. A new problem has been developing in Guwahati for the last 3-4 months, number of beggars & street-dwellers has increased considerably. That poses a challenge of different sorts. We are conducting a drive to send them to government shelter homes and NGOs. We are trying to understand why they are outside on the streets,”.
The drive comes after Himanta Biswa Sarma asked the Deputy Commissioner to provide immediate accommodation and income opportunities for the family, which was staying under the flyover in Ulubari.
Meanwhile, the flood situation in the Barpeta district of Assam is improving but nearly 88,000 people in the district are still affected by the deluge. Many flood-affected people are currently taking shelter in relief camps set up by the district administration on roads and embankments.
In the Kayakuchi area in the Barpeta district, around 100 families have taken shelter at the Paka Betbari Development Block campus after the flood waters submerged their homes, reports say.
According to locals, they are facing many problems including food, clean drinking water, medicines, etc due to floods.At list 113 villages of the district are still under water. The flood waters submerged 312.75 hectares of cropland in the district, as per report.
Meanwhile, the flood situation in Assam has marginally improved but it has damaged the homes and household items of various people leaving them to take shelter on embankments.The heavy rainfall in many districts today in the state increased the possibility of flood again.
