Dibrugarh: Fresh erosion caused by the Brahmaputra was witnessed in the Puja ghat area of Dibrugarh on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Water resources department has being carried out prevention work to stop the ongoing erosion.

As per the local people, the erosion was observed on the new stretch along the river bank of the town since last fortnight.

Dibrugarh MLA Prashanta Phukan and Deputy commissioner Biswajit Pegu rushed to the area to assess the situation and directed the officials to mobilise men and machineries to prevent the river from gobbling up the land.

The stretch hit by the fresh round of erosion is being fortified by geo-bags as immediate measures.

Taking to the reporters, Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan said, “The erosion has started in the area since 2 pm last night. The department concerned has taken preventive measures to stop the ongoing erosion. We have already informed Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding the matter,”.

“The river course has been changed and the river which has been flowing from the upstream has suddenly hitting the lower areas causing erosion. We have submitted a proposal to Asian Development Bank(ADB) for permanent solution of erosion throughout the DTP dyke and the vulnerable areas,” MLA Prasanta Phukan said.

Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu said, “Earlier, erosion caused massive damaged in Koilaghat area of Dibrugarh. Protection measures has been taken in that area but now fresh erosion started in Puja ghat area from last night. The Water resources department has taken measures to stop the ongoing erosion. Now, the erosion has been stedy,”.

Erosion has been causing serious threat for the people of Dibrugarh town and now the fresh erosion has yet again panicked the residents who are living near the DTP dyke.

“We need permanent solution to stop the erosion. If permanent step would not be taken soon, the erosion will create havoc for the people,” said a resident.

On the other hand, Dibrugarh district administration has took out a eviction drive infront of the puja ghat.
