GUWAHATI: Union home minister Amit Shah is closely monitoring the situation in Manipur and is in constant touch with top functionaries of the state and central governments.

Shah is also taking regular inputs from security and intelligence agencies about the Manipur situation, which remained peaceful but tense.

Union home minister  held two video conferences attended by the Manipur chief minister, the state’s chief secretary, the police chief, the Union home secretary and other top officials of the central government on Thursday.

He also held telephonic conversations with chief ministers Neiphiu Rio of Nagaland, Zoramthanga of Mizoram and Himanta Biswa Sarma of Assam in view of the situation in Manipur on Thursday.

After the presence of huge security forces, the situation in Manipur has been brought under control through coordinated actions by all stakeholders.

Several coloumns of the Army and Assam Rifles were deployed overnight to contain large-scale rioting that broke out across Manipur between tribals and the majority Meitei community, displacing over 9,000 people.

“The situation has been brought under control through coordinated actions by all stakeholders. The Indian Air Force (IAF) undertook continuous sorties from two airfields in Assam employing C17 Globemaster and AN 32 aircraft,” a statement from Defence PRO stated.

The Indian Army on Thursday sounded alert on fake videos being circulated related to the security situation in the state.

Violence first erupted in Torbung area in Churachandpur district during the ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ organised by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) on Wednesday to protest the demand of Meiteis, who account for 53 per cent of the state’s population, for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
