Guwahati: : Bagurumba and Bhaona dance and their lyrics are the echo of Assamese conscience.
They cover the entire history and the gradual development of its culture and religious awakening.
“The deep studies of the dance and lyrics of Bagarumba reveal that it is not only limited as a traditional dance and song of the indigenous Boro community of Assam or northeastern states of the country but it has a global appeal and a history of human civilization. It’s the heritage of human race,” Supriya Saranga, a dance teacher in Tinsukia district of upper Assam said.
“Have you seen a butterfly, colorful, charming, swinging its wings and sitting on one flower to another !How gracious ! so is Bagurumba personified with butterflies and called ” Butterfly dance ” also . Because it’s personified with movements of Butterflies and birds .Our Bihu too have movements of birds . Many other dance forms of our country and the entire world are inspired by birds, animals, nature etc.” Supriya further said.
It is remarkable that this year Rongali Bihu dance of Assam got place in Guinness Book of World Records. This event has brought a cultural consciousness among the people of Assam and entire northeast.
According to reports, Bagarumba dance will be staged with great pomp and gaiety with more than twenty thousand artists not only to record the name in Guinness Book but also to make known the world that besides Bihu Assam has a rich Bagarumba dance culture also .
It may be mentioned here that the many dance forms of Assam has already got global identification hundreds years before. One such dance form of Assam known to the world and attracts lakhs of tourists, intellectuals, dancers ,spirituals , researchers of the world are Bhaona Dance .
Bhaona dance has evolved from the compositions of a Vaishnavite saint and a preacher named Srimanta Sankardeva. This dance drama is purely religious and is based on the episodes of Lord Krishna’s life.
Bhaona dance is usually played by both the men and women at night .The performers speak the Bjrawali language. It is performed in Namghars and Xatra’s grounds. The Mukha Bhaona of Majuli island is popular across the world.
