Assam: Opposition leader says not necessary to bring law on polygamy

Posted on August 7, 2023 By No Comments on Assam: Opposition leader says not necessary to bring law on polygamy

Guwahati: The Opposition leader Debabrat Saikia on Monday said that not necessary to bring law on polygamy in Assam.

Addressing a press conference here, Saikia said, “Yesterday chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma received the expert committee report on polygamy. It is not necessary to bring another law on polygamy because discussion is going on bring Uniform Civil Code( UCC). All will come under UCC then why we need another law for polygamy,”.

“As it is not wise move to enforced some law without taking into consideration of various aspects and also without considering the stakeholders and various political parties. This move I feel something like Cow Protection Bill, which was passed in the Assam Assembly without listening to others. Their is already a Cow Protection Act in Assam but still the chief minister passed another bill. The Cow protection bill was passed during the tenure of Congress in 1957. But chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wants to passed another bill on Cow protection under him, which was passed,” Saikia stated.

He further added, “Now, we see cow peddlers, cow syndicate and cow being held in police stations and the policemen have to feed them. In Gowshala also, their is no sufficient fund to keep the cow in a good order. It is very grim situation, in the name of protecting cow, we are killing cows,”.

“Similarly, when this polygamy act they want to pass, I hope it will not like cow protection bill. It should be done through negotiation,” Saikia said.

The expert committee which was formed by Assam government to study the prospects of a total ban on polygamy, has submitted its report of its study to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday.

The justice Rumi Phookan headed committee comprises advocate general Debajit Saikia, additional advocate general Nalin Kohli and lawyer Nekibur Zaman.
Meanwhile, the Assam government is planning to introduce a bill to ban polygamy in the state during the upcoming assembly session in the state.
