Makar Sankranti: 7 Tips To Remember While Flying A Kite For The First Time

Posted on January 11, 2025 By No Comments on Makar Sankranti: 7 Tips To Remember While Flying A Kite For The First Time

One of the most treasured and enjoyable rituals around Makar Sankranti is the tradition of flying kites. As thrilling as the prospect of pulling on our first kite line may be for most of us, here are a few things to keep in mind for a hassle-free kite flying experience.

Choosing the right kite: Rookies are advised to pick a standard diamond-shaped kite with one line to ease themselves into the activity. The fancy kites, though they look good, are difficult to navigate if you are a novice.

Picking a suitable area: While choosing a spot, it’s important to pick an open space that will allow you maximal freedom of movement. Avoid flying kites near steep slopes, trees, traffic or stones to curb risk of accidents. Pulling and releasing the line depends on understanding a multitude of factors such as wind strength, speed and direction.

Stay wary of electricity: It’s advisable to buy kites with cotton lines instead of those containing metal parts since they conduct electricity and pose the flyer at a risk of electrocution. Steer clear of electric poles and make sure you fly kites in dry conditions since risk of rain or thunderstorm could make the line damp.

Be mindful of others: As enjoyable as the activity may be, it’s essential to keep an eye out for others’ safety as well. Avoid flying kites near children, birds and dogs.

Protect your fingers: Continuous kite-flying can often cut into unprotected flesh causing severe burns and abrasions. In order to protect your fingers, opt for leather finger protectors, rubber gloves or cotton hand tape with a good grip.

Avoid fatigue: Standing with your back arched and head towards the sky for long periods can be quite taxing on your body leading to muscle pain and elbow sprains. To prevent loss of limb, try using wrist protectors and take rest periods in between to avoid fatigue.

Stay hydrated and satiated: Engaging in kite-flying for long durations in sunny hours can be quite draining for the body. Make sure to keep your water intake up and gorge on as many tilgul laddoos, chikki and puran poli as possible this Makar Sankranti!

Keep in mind to follow these simple steps so that you relish the most and worry the least this festival season.
