Despite a renowned economist serving as prime minister in the Congress-led administration for ten years till 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday that the country’s economy only improved by one position to reach the tenth spot. Introducing himself as a “chaiwala,” Modi claimed that after taking office as prime minister in 2014, India’s economy had grown to be the fifth largest in the world.

The prime minister compared his performance to the ten-year term of the previous prime minister, Manmohan Singh, while speaking to a crowd in Rajkot, Gujarat, in favour of BJP candidates.

On December 1, the first round of voting will be held for 89 of the state’s 182 Assembly seats. Before the first round of voting, this was Prime Minister Modi’s final rally.

“The Congress had been in power for ten years before I was appointed prime minister in 2014. Manmohan Singh, a well-known economist, was our prime minister when Congress first took office in 2004, and the Indian economy was ranked 11th in the world.

“Whatever they did, India’s economy grew to be the tenth largest in the following years. India moved from number 11 to number 10 after ten years, according to the PM.

In spite of Modi’s claim that he is not an economist, he is one.
