Guwahati The exhumation of IIT Kharagpur student Faizan Ahmed is supposed to be carried out at the Amolapatty Kabarsthan in Dibrugarh on Tuesday.

A 4-member team from the Kharagpur Town Police Station led by Inspector Biswaranjan Banerjee (IO) arrived at Dibrugarh to carry out the Calcutta High Court’s order of April 25 which called for the exhumation of the IIT Kharagpur student’s body from his burial ground to conduct a second post-mortem at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital saying that it was necessary to bring out the truth behind his death.

The body of Faizan Ahmed who belong to Assam’s Tinsukia is buried at the Amolapatty Kabarsthan in Dibrugarh town.

Dibrugarh Additional SP (HQ) Bitul Chetia on Monday said that the exhumation of the body is supposed to be carried out on Tuesday. The exhumation will be carried out by a forensics team.

It is learnt that the Bengal police team has also sought the assistance of forensics experts from Guwahati.

Earlier it was said that the Forensics department of the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh will carry out the exhumation process. However till evening the police team has not contacted the AMCH authorities, as informed by AMCH superintendent Dr Prasanta Dihingia.

Twenty-three-year-old Faizan was a third-year mechanical engineering student at IIT Kharagpur. On October 14, 2022, his decomposed body was found in his hostel room of the Lala Lajpat Rai Hall of Residence. The college administration said that the student died by suicide while the family claimed that he was murdered. Faizan’s parents filed a writ petition in Calcutta High Court, alleging that their son had been murdered.

Justice Rajasekhar Mantha in his order on April 25 stated: “This court is of the view that a second post-mortem is necessary. The body of the victim has been buried as per Muslim rites at Assam. Let the body of the victim, Faizan Ahmed, be exhumed. The investigating officer in the matter shall coordinate with the Assam Police and ensure that the body and/or remains are exhumed, brought to Kolkata by the state police and fresh post-mortem is conducted.”
