Guwahati: After massive crackdown on child marriage cases in Assam, a young widow allegedly committed suicide in Assam’s South-Salamara Mancachar district.
The deceased woman identified as Khushboo Begum. The incident took place on Friday in South Salmara-Mankachar district. Khushboo Begum was a mother of two children.
Sources said the woman was married when she was a minor and feared that her father would be arrested after the CM’s directive on child marriage cases. It has been learned that the woman became a widow after her husband passed away during Covid-19.
In a separate incident, a 23-year-old woman identified as Afroza Khatun reached Golakganj police station and threatened to commit suicide if her husband and father are not release. Khatun’s husband and father were apprehended by police after CM’s directive to crackdown on child marriage cases.
Speaking to reporters, Afroza Khatun said, “Why Himanta Biswa Sharma apprehended my husband? Who has given the right to Sharma to do so? I will go to the campus in court and commit suicide if my husband and father won’t get released today itself from the lock-up,”.
Khatun claimed that she was married at the of 19, while she was born in 1999. “I will commit suicide if I don’t find my husband and father. I need my husband and father back as soon as possible, I was born in 1999 my marriage took place in 2018, I am an adult,” Khatun claimed.
On the other hand, Assam chief minister on Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday informed that till today morning 2211 people were arrested in connection with child marriage cases in the state.
Speaking to reporters, Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “The crackdown against child marriage will continue till next assembly polls in the state. Those who were involved in the child marriage strict action will be taken against them,”.
