GUWAHATI: Security forces neutralised one Ulfa(I) militant on Thursday after a gunfight broke out at Margherita in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district.

The deceased Ulfa(I) cadre has been identified as Uttam Lahon alias Uday Asom of Purani Jaboka Gaon in Sonari.

Sources said the gunfight lasted for five to seven minutes between security forces and Ulfa(I).

“Seven to nine Ulfa(I) cadres led by Udoy Axom and Mrigankha Axom were taking shelter in Margherita and Lekhapani Police station area from last 8-10 days. On Thursday early morning a gunfight took place but taking the advantage of darkness, the Ulfa(I) cadres fled from the area,” said a source.

“They were planning to kidnap one influential businessman from Tinsukia district and they are also planning to target DGP G P Singh and IGP NER Jitmol Doley for their consistent action against ULFA probably by launching grenade or setting up IED,” the sources added.

One small arm, one rifle, two grenades, IED material, one bag pack with blanket, medicine were recovered from encounter spot.

Meanwhile, security forces have cordoned the entire area and launched a massive operation to flush out the Ulfa(I) cadres.
