Assam: Eviction drive against street vendors in Dibrugarh

Posted on August 7, 2023 By No Comments on Assam: Eviction drive against street vendors in Dibrugarh

DIBRUGARH: The Dibrugarh Municipal Board on Monday carried out an eviction drive against street vendors who were plying their businesses by illegally encroaching the footpaths in Dibrugarh town.

Earlier the Dibrugarh Municipal Board (DMB) had sent notices to the street vendors to relocate their businesses to the designated vending zones by August 6. The civic body had provided seven designated vending zones for the street vendors in RKB road, AT road, Khalihamari road, Graham Bazar – Paltan Bazar road and Paltan Bazar – AMCH road.

Additionally a “Khau Galli” (food street) was exclusively provided to street food vendors from the Dibrugarh Police Reserve entry point to the DTP culvert along the Mancotta Road. While around 30 percent of the vendors shifted to the designated vending zones by Sunday (August 6) which was the last date for shifting, the eviction drive was carried against those vendors who were reluctant to move.

The eviction drive was led by DMB Chairman Saikat Patra, vice chairman Ujjal Phukon, DMB executive officer Rashika Shyam, ward commissioners and assisted by a team of Dibrugarh police.

“We have already sent them notices to relocate to the designated vending zones. They were provided enough time to move. The eviction drive was carried out against them who did not carried out the order. Their carts and stalls have been seized. They will be able to collect it from the Municipal office on the condition that they shift to the designated vending zones,” DMB Chairman Saikat Patra said.

The seven designated vending zones notified by the Dibrugarh Municipal Board are – 1. RKB Road (UCO Bank to Head Post Office, Rotary Road entry point to opposite of Indsurya Hotel and Cole Road entry point to Hanuman Mandir culvert), 2. Khalihamari Road (Police Reserve entry point to Red Cross Road entry point), 3. Graham Bazar – Paltan Bazar Road (Indian Oil petrol pump to JJ Memorial Hospital), 4. Paltan Bazar – AMCH Road (Apeksha Hospital to Radha Krishna Mandir), 5. AT Road (Jail Road entry point to Graham Bazar Girls’ School).
