GUWAHATI, DEC 28: The border security force (BSF) seized a massive consignment of contraband of Yaba tablets in Assam’s Cachar district on Wednesday.
Yaba tablets worth Rs 1.75 crore were seized by the BSF who were patroling in the area.
Around 17,000 Yaba tablets packed in 89 packets were recovered by the BSF.
According to police fficial, the contraband tablets were seized from a vehicle, with Meghalaya registration number, from National Highway 6 in Cachar district of Assam.
“The vehicle transporting the drugs entered into Cachar district of Assam from Meghalaya.The drugs were hidden in the left door of the car, which has also been seized,” he said.
The driver of the car has been apprehended by the security agency in connection with the recovery and seizure of the drugs consignment.
“Acting on specific BSF input, troops of 1 Bn BSF, Mizoram and Cachar Frontier along with Customs Officials in a Joint Ops, seized 17,000 Nos Yaba tablets and apprehended one drug peddler at Katigorah, District Cachar, Assam,” the BSF stated.
Yaba is a combination of methamphetamine (a powerful and addictive stimulant) and caffeine. Yaba, which means crazy medicine in Thai, is produced in Southeast and East Asia. The drug is popular in Asian communities in the United States and increasingly is available at raves and techno parties.
On December 17, a total of 6,20,000 taba tablets were seized in Cachar and three Manipur residents, including a teenager, were arrested. Mahatta said that it was the biggest seizure of yaba tablets in Cachar.
Meanwhile, security forces have launched a massive manhunt against the contraband drugs and so far many peddlers were arrested.
