Guwahati: About 40 medical colleges across the country have lost recognition over the past two months allegedly for not following standards set by the National Medical Commission (NMC).

About 100 more medical colleges in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Assam, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry and West Bengal may also face similar action.

The colleges were not found to be complying with the set norms and several lapses related to CCTV cameras, Aadhaar-linked biometric attendance procedures, and faculty rolls were found during inspections carried out by the Commission

Speaking to media persons on Thursday, Dr Sanjib Kakoti, Principal, Assam Medical College stated that “It is a regular phenomenon that the National Medical Commission (NMC) carries out periodical inspection in the entire medical colleges of the country. Similarly, an inspection was carried out in AMCH on August 5 and 6, 2022,”.

“After their inspection, the AMCH authority received a communication from NMC mentioning some shortfalls in the operational system of the institution like non-compliance of Aadhaar based biometric system, non – compliance of installation of CCTV cameras and non-availability of two faculties in ENT department,” Kakoti stated.

He added, “Accordingly, we have fulfilled all the requirements and the compliance report has been sent in the month of March, 2023.We are expecting the clearance from the NMC very soon. So, there is nothing to worry about,”.
