Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh): A one-day international seminar on ‘Tradition of Samvat in India: Distinctiveness and Evidence’ was organised at Jyotisha department, Maharshi Panini Sanskrit evam Vedic Vishwavidyalaya on Saturday, under the joint aegis of Maharaja Vikramaditya Shodhpeeth.
Special guest, Gordana Nis from Ukraine highlighted that Ukraine’s calendar is also based on Vedic Panchang, taking into account the sun, moon, seasons and agriculture. She said that both Vedic Panchang and Ukraine’s calendar are based on the rhythm of nature. For unity of the world, a single calendar should be established.
Nis described Vedas as the source of all knowledge. Chief guest, Prof Mangalam Srinivas Shrikant from Tamil Nadu described the distinctiveness of Tamil calendar, saying that many Samvats have been in use over time, each with its own importance and history.
Guest of honour, Dr Kedar Narayan Joshi, former Acharya of Vikram University said that India has more than 25 Samvats, including Vikram Samvat, which is widely accepted in India and other countries. In his presidential address, vice-chancellor Prof Vijay Kumar said that if Nepal accepts Vikram Samvat, why can’t India? Why is the Gregorian calendar still widely used in India even after so many years of Independence?
The program was attended by scholars, social workers, students and researchers from Nepal, Ukraine and various parts of India.
