Indore’s MGM Medical College Ragging Case: Probe Panel Talks Only To Boys Hostel Students

Posted on December 20, 2024 By No Comments on Indore’s MGM Medical College Ragging Case: Probe Panel Talks Only To Boys Hostel Students

Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Amid the ongoing probe into the ragging incident at the boys hostel of MGM Medical College, the Anti-Ragging Committee presented a suspected senior from the 2018 batch before junior students of 2024 batch for identification, on Thursday.

However, none of the students named him as the perpetrator even as the college administration confirmed that ragging incidents did occur in the hostel. Meanwhile, the investigation has drawn criticism for neglecting a key detail that the complainant had explicitly mentioned that he had left the hostel due to the harassment.

Yet, the committee confined its inquiry to students currently residing in the hostel, leaving out those who have relocated due to the alleged ragging by the seniors. In a complaint sent to UGC Delhi, a victim detailed severe harassment, including nightly ragging sessions from 11 pm to 6 am, being forced to stand for hours for cricket fielding, and humiliation by seniors.

The student expressed frustration over the lack of intervention by hostel authorities and professors, leading him to move to a private hostel with a burden on his pocket.

Shift juniors to separate block, enhance security:

Admin to MGM A district administration team has instructed the college to enhance security, install more CCTV cameras, deploy additional guards, and shift the 2024 batch to a separate block. The team also suggested installing panic buttons in the hostel premises. Collector Asheesh Singh said that the investigation is on and a team is collecting evidence. He said that it cannot be denied that the incident didn’t happen.

Cyber Cell to be roped in

In-charge dean Dr Nilesh Dalal stated that cyber cell assistance is being sought to trace anonymous complaints. “We have been replying to the UGC about the actions being taken. However, the students denied any ragging incident,” he said. Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav also demanded strict action against the culprit and pointed out that ragging is a punishable offence.

“Discussions have been held with the college authorities. Students should be kept separately in the hostel according to their batches. The warden should take rounds between 9 and 12 pm every day. Alarm systems should be installed at different places, and the dean should monitor the CCTV cameras.” – Ghanshyam Dhangar, SDM
