DU Issues Guidelines For Flexible UG Courses Exit And Re-Entry System; Here’s What Students Need To Know

Posted on July 31, 2025 By NewsX 360 No Comments on DU Issues Guidelines For Flexible UG Courses Exit And Re-Entry System; Here’s What Students Need To Know

The University of Delhi (DU) has issued the implementation of the Multiple Entry and Exit (ME-ME) system in its undergraduate programmes, under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF) 2022. The recently launched system provides students with the flexibility to exit their degree programme after the successful completion of any even-numbered semester and re-enter within a given period of time.

What Is the ME-ME System?

Under this system, students will be able to exit their undergraduate programmes after completing any even semester and re-enter later on within a specified timeframe. The system is based on an academic credit system, where:

-1 credit = 1 hour of classroom teaching or

-2 hours of practical/field work weekly

-There are 1,200 learning hours (expected) per academic year

Exit Options and Qualification Awards

The credit-based system provides varying degrees of qualification in terms of duration of study and total credits accumulated:

-After 1 year (44 Credits): Undergraduate Certificate

-After 2 years (88 Credits): Undergraduate Diploma

-After 3 years (132 Credits): Bachelor’s Degree

-After 4 years (176 Credits): Bachelor’s Degree with Honours / Honours with Research / Honours with Entrepreneurship (based on academic pathway)

Re-Entry Rules and Credit Validity

DU has also established re-entry provisions. Students who exit their programmes early can come back to the same course and college in a maximum span of seven years if their earlier gained credits are valid. Credit validity spans from two to four years, depending on the qualification gained prior to exiting. The university’s announcement contains comprehensive information for readmission based on the point of exiting. For example, a student who graduates after year one can re-enroll within three years and continue from year two, ultimately qualifying for the honours degree if all credits are done, according to the PTI report.

Application and Administrative Guidelines

Students who are planning to exit should apply in advance before the commencement of the subsequent academic session. If a student is exiting in the middle of a session, only the qualification obtained in the previous completed academic year will be accepted as valid. In the event of any disputes or misunderstanding of the ME-ME rules, the Vice Chancellor will have the authority to interpret and settle such issues.

DU has also made it public that it will launch individual guidelines for lateral entry from other universities, which will be announced in a later notification. The program is designed to support increased flexibility, accessibility, and student-focused learning, empowering students to customise their academic experiences according to personal needs and situations.
