Approximately 90% of TOEFL Test Takers Choose To Study In The United States Says ETS India Chief

Posted on January 6, 2025 By No Comments on Approximately 90% of TOEFL Test Takers Choose To Study In The United States Says ETS India Chief

Sachin Jain, Country Manager of ETS India, shared insights into the trends of TOEFL test takers and their preferred study destinations. He explained that the majority of TOEFL test takers send their scores to universities in the United States, while others also consider other preferred destinations like the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Germany.

“Approximately 90% of TOEFL test takers choose to study in the United States, highlighting its status as the most sought-after destination for higher education. The remaining 10% diversify their academic paths by pursuing opportunities in other leading countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Germany,” Jain told The Free Press Journal.

Why is USA a popular choice?

Jain attributes the U.S.’s popularity to its world-class universities, cultural diversity, and the vast academic and career opportunities it offers. He pointed out that programs such as the MS and MBA from U.S. universities are consistently in high demand among Indian students, making them the largest international student group in the country.

Another key factor attracting Indian students to the U.S. is the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program, which allows F-1 visa students to gain temporary employment in fields related to their studies. Jain highlighted that the U.S. education system’s emphasis on quality education, particularly in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields, aligns well with the career ambitions of many Indian students. The U.S. also has a strong demand for skilled professionals in these areas, making it an attractive destination for aspiring engineers and STEM graduates.

“The U.S., with its research-driven economy, fosters a culture of innovation and technology, offering abundant opportunities for students to engage in cutting-edge research. Indian students, particularly those in engineering and STEM fields, are drawn to this environment for its ample opportunities in technology and innovation,” Jain noted.

Other popular choices

Student mobility from India has been on the rise, according to data from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Last year, Canada, the U.S., and the UK were identified as the top three study destinations, followed by Australia and Germany.

Jain acknowledged that Canada has been a popular choice for Indian students in recent years. However, recent geopolitical issues, Canada’s cap on study permits, and challenges related to housing and employment have caused some students to reconsider their options. He expressed confidence that Canada will regain its position as a preferred destination once these issues are resolved.

On the other hand, Jain highlighted the UK’s strong academic heritage and prestigious institutions, particularly the Russell Group universities, known for their research-intensive programs. “TOEFL test takers continue to show significant interest in applying to UK universities. The UK’s Graduate Route, which allows international students who complete an undergraduate or master’s degree to stay in the UK for up to two years after their studies, is another attractive feature for international students,” he said.

While the U.S. remains a top choice, Jain expects TOEFL test takers to continue showing strong interest in UK universities, with hopes that Canada will regain its appeal as the housing and employment conditions improve.
