Former India cricketer shared an emotional Instagram post after announcing his retirement from international cricket. In the post, the veteran spinner expressed his gratitude to fans and reflected on his journey.

Ashwin’s retirement came as a surprise to many, given his stature as one of cricket’s most decorated spinners. The announcement, made during a press conference alongside captain Rohit Sharma at the Gabba, took place shortly after India drew the third Test in Brisbane during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Rohit revealed that Ashwin had discussed his retirement plans before the Australia tour and had initially been persuaded to play the second Test in Adelaide. Addressing questions about the timing of the decision, Rohit defended Ashwin’s choice, emphasizing that every player has the right to determine when to step away.

Reflecting on his illustrious career, Ashwin shared his gratitude: “If somebody had told me in 2011 that I would be getting so many wickets, retiring in 2024 on December the 18th, I wouldn’t have believed them. This is a game I loved, but I never expected to receive so much love, take so many wickets, and score so many runs. I feel immense gratitude towards everyone who supported and challenged me. I’m very happy today. Thank you.”

Meanwhile, India have issued a maiden call-up to Mumbai off-spinner Tanush Kotian, who is set to join the team as a replacement of Ashwin for the remaining two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, starting in Melbourne.
