Dr. Darshan Banker: A Controversial Contender in the Baroda Cricket Association Presidency Race

Posted on January 18, 2026January 18, 2026 By Team NewsX 360 No Comments on Dr. Darshan Banker: A Controversial Contender in the Baroda Cricket Association Presidency Race

Amid Gujarat’s growing prominence in cricket, highlighted by international ODIs, Women’s Premier League matches, and the new state-of-the-art BCA Stadium developed under Pranav Amin’s leadership, Dr. Darshan Banker has entered the contest for the Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) presidency in the elections scheduled for February 15, 2026. While many in Gujarat celebrate recent successes, such as the well-attended India vs. New Zealand ODI after a long gap and the hosting of WPL games, Banker’s candidacy has sparked debate. He presents himself as an advocate for transparency, but critics question his motives, suggesting an intent to leverage the association’s rising resources for personal benefit, supported by a group from Vadodara. His background includes allegations of medical negligence, a large-scale income tax raid in 2022, and setbacks in public appointments, prompting concerns about whether his goal is genuine reform or something else.

A Medical Career with Ongoing Questions of Negligence and Practices

Dr. Darshan Banker leads the Bankers Group of Hospitals in Vadodara and Surat as a noted cardiothoracic surgeon focused on cardiac care. However, his professional record includes multiple claims of substandard treatment favoring financial gain over patient outcomes. In 2013, the family of patient Chimanbhai Samubhai Christian approached the Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, alleging negligence during an angioplasty at Bankers Heart Institute. They claimed improper stent placement caused ongoing pain, required further surgery, and resulted in excessive billing over Rs. 4 lakh, leading to significant hardship. The case was eventually dismissed in 2023 due to insufficient evidence from the complainants, but it reflects recurring concerns about ethical standards.

Further issues arose in 2019 when social activists presented a memorandum to the Vadodara Collector, calling for action against Bankers Hospital over alleged negligence and operational shortcomings. Online discussions and public comments have accused Banker of being removed from Baroda Heart Institute due to malpractices and labeled him as profit-oriented. Some reports mention a patient’s death linked to staff negligence, with claims that the hospital protected employees rather than ensuring accountability. Recent patient feedback often mentions shortcomings in post-operative care after major procedures like bypass surgeries. With family members, including wife Dr. Parul Banker and son Dr. Yash Banker, involved in the operations, observers suggest this close-knit setup may limit outside scrutiny and allow issues to continue.

These recurring medical concerns contribute to a perception of a focus on business growth over consistent high-quality care. As Banker seeks leadership in BCA, questions arise about whether a similar approach could affect the handling of association finances under the label of reform.

The 2022 Income Tax Raid and Financial Scrutiny

In June 2022, the Income Tax Department conducted extensive searches at more than 35 locations connected to Dr. Banker, his wife, the Bankers Group of Hospitals, residences, and related sites in Vadodara and Surat. The operation targeted possible tax evasion, undisclosed assets, and financial discrepancies, with officials collecting documents and electronic data indicating inconsistencies in income and asset reporting. While public details on any confirmed evasion or penalties remain limited, the widespread nature of the raids raised serious questions about financial management in his healthcare network.

No final outcomes like penalties or legal actions have been publicly confirmed, but the event has fueled doubts about Banker’s suitability for a role requiring strong financial oversight in BCA. Critics ask whether someone facing such inquiries in their private business could be trusted with the growing revenues from major cricket events.

Challenges in Public Positions and Procedural Issues

Banker’s attempts at roles outside medicine have faced obstacles. In 2019, his proposed appointment as a trustee for the Shri Narhari Manav Kalyan Trust, which operates Narhari Hospital in Vadodara, was turned down by the charity commissioner due to the trust’s long-standing violations of rules, including having too few trustees. While not a direct fault of Banker, it associated him with non-compliant organizations and added to questions about his record in public responsibilities.

Similar procedural matters appeared in his BCA bid. He filed his nomination on January 5, 2026, but was absent during initial scrutiny due to a family wedding in Goa, sending a representative instead. BCA rules were not fully clear on mandatory personal presence, leading to a Gujarat High Court intervention on January 9, 2026, directing BCA not to reject the nomination on those grounds alone. The association later confirmed it would accept the filing with a representative present. This incident, alongside challenges to incumbent Pranav Amin’s eligibility, highlights the contentious atmosphere surrounding the election.

From Collaboration to Rivalry in BCA Politics

Banker initially supported Pranav Amin after his 2019 win, contributing to efforts in infrastructure and development. Under Amin, BCA achieved major progress, including the construction of a modern stadium that now hosts WPL matches and the recent landmark India-New Zealand ODI, drawing large crowds and boosting Baroda’s cricket status.

Relations later deteriorated, with Banker criticizing the current leadership for alleged mismanagement and excessive expenditure while promoting himself as a champion of accountability, backed by prominent figures from Vadodara. Opponents view this shift as strategic, aimed at accessing BCA’s increased income from high-profile events for private purposes or other ends. The disrupted November 2025 AGM added to worries that Banker’s contested history could shift focus away from cricket growth toward personal interests.

Lingering Concerns Ahead of the Election

With the February 15, 2026, BCA elections approaching, Dr. Darshan Banker’s campaign continues amid scrutiny. Achievements such as the 2025 “Most Dynamic Doctor” award from IMA Vadodara and his online health advice do little to offset the ongoing debates over medical allegations, the 2022 tax raid, and compliance issues. In a position that requires complete integrity, his past raises doubts about priorities. Cricket fans in Gujarat, enjoying the progress under Amin, face a key choice: whether Banker’s involvement will benefit BCA or introduce risks tied to his background.
