Indore (Madhya Pradesh): A retired professor was duped of Rs 5.5 lakh by an online scammer, who posed himself as an officer from his bank, police said on Saturday. The accused had sent an APK file to the complainant and told him to download the same to increase the credit limit of his credit card.

Additional DCP (crime) Rajesh Dandotiya told media persons that an 85-year-old man lodged a complaint that he had received a call from an unidentified number and the caller had posed himself as the officer from the credit card division of his bank.

The caller told him to update KYC. He also informed the complainant that he could also increase the limit of his credit card. The conman had given some account-related information about the complainant so he trusted him after which he received an APK file which he downloaded.

After a few minutes, the complainant received a message of deduction of Rs 5.5 lakh from his account. He immediately informed his bank officials and later lodged a complaint with the crime branch.

A case under various sections of BNS was registered and the crime branch officials are investigating the case to identify the accused on the basis of their mobile number and the bank account which was used for receiving money. Police believed that the accused had made a phone call using a virtual number to mislead the police.
